He has subsequently been allowed to reunite with former teammate Thierry Henry in Ligue 1.

Despite Fabregas flying to Monaco to finalise the move on Sunday, Chelsea had been stalling on a deal until the club could find a replacement.

"It's a great pleasure to join Monaco, a new project for me, " Fabregas said.

Fabregas left the pitch in tears after making his final appearance for Chelsea in last Saturday's FA Cup third round win over Nottingham Forest. "I am very excited".

"The group is of quality with young players and a young coach".

The club put up a lengthy farewell message on their website highlighting the ex-Barcelona star's achievements in four-and-a-half years at Stamford Bridge.

Cup matches have offered Fabregas the main chance to impress under Maurizio Sarri, with Jorginho's arrival in the summer forcing Fabregas down the pecking order in terms of midfield places.

Chelsea have paid a heartfelt tribute to Fabregas following his departure.

Having enjoyed a glittering career, capped by winning the World Cup with Spain in 2010, Fabregas arrives at a club who were French champions just 18 months ago but are now in crisis.

The midfielder's switch to the Ligue 1 club brings the curtain down on his four-and-a-half- year Chelsea career, a period in which he won four major trophies.

The former Marseille and Roma player was expected to put pen to paper on a move from Turkish club Antalyaspor, but Monaco announced earlier on Friday that he had failed a medical due to a calf problem.
