The top 3 vendors boosted market share and Lenovo was No. 1, according to IDC and Gartner. "Consumer shipments accounted for approximately 40 percent of PC shipments in 2018 compared with representing 49 percent of shipments in 2014", Mikako Kitagawa, senior principal analyst at Gartner, said. "The impact from the CPU shortage affected vendors' ability to fulfill demand created by business PC upgrades".

Gartner got nearly the same results with 68.6 million PC shipments during the same period (down 4.3% year-over-year). According to the market research company, the Redmond giant had a 3.3% market share in the USA in Q4 2018 with 472K PC shipments, down 12.9% year-over-year.

According to Gartner's latest shipment figures for the last quarter of 2018, shipments dropped 4.3 per cent compared to the same quarter in a year ago.

Lenovo grabbed the top PC shipping spot in the fourth quarter.

As for the annual state of affairs, Lenovo shipped almost 58.5 million PCs in 2018, with HP not too far behind with 56.3 million units shipped.

The other trend was political and economic uncertainties in some countries dampening PC demand, Kitagawa said. In regard to 4Q18, the global market was dominated by three vendors: Lenovo, HP, and Dell. Region-wise, the US saw a small increase in volume from the previous year, whereas it was all negative in the Europe Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region and the Asia-Pacific region, excluding Japan, saw a single-digit decline - majorly due to the US-China trade war.

Apple's market share of 7.2 percent was a distant fourth, declining 3.8 percent on 4.9 million units shipped.

"There was even uncertainty in the U.S. - where the overall economy has been strong - among vulnerable buyer groups, such as small and midsize businesses (SMBs)", she said.

Gartner explains that the growth the PC market experienced in 2018 was mostly the result of Windows 10 upgrades, which convinced more customers to purchase new hardware. "Holiday sales are no longer a major factor driving consumer demand for PCs". The research firm highlights that Lenovo led the market in the quarter with a market share of 24.2 percent, showing a 5.9 percent increase year-over-year.

Gartner had more detailed results about the United States market, where Microsoft remains the top 5 PC manufacturer behind HP, Dell, Lenovo and Apple.
