An explosion has rocked central Paris, with dozens of people injured, historic buildings damaged and cars alight.

A fire broke out after the blast at around 9 a.m. local time, which police suspect may have been caused by a gas leak at a bakery.

Witness Luke filmed the carnage and said people feared a auto bomb was to blame.

"Blocks away this looks like a major, major explosion that just happened". Debris from a burned vehicle and broken glass littered the pavement. A Paris spokeswoman told CNN there are victims, adding it is too early to say how many.

The blast occurred on the Rue de Trevise, which is located in the 9th arrondissement of the French capital.

The explosion came amid heavy security in Paris and around France for the ninth successive weekend of yellow vest protests.
