Saints defender Yan Valery was then shown a second yellow card for a foul on Marc Albrighton but Long doubled their lead just before half-time.

Puel's first defeat against the club which sacked him in July 2017 will only turn up the heat on the Leicester manager as Southampton became the second successive struggler to win at the King Power Stadium.

Wilfred Ndidi's consolation failed to rally Leicester as Ralph Hasenhuttl's Saints moved out of the Premier League relegation zone.

The Foxes were booed off with at least one "Puel Out" sign spotted but the Frenchman will ignore the critics.

Baggies boss Darren Moore said: "We're obviously very disappointed to see Harvey go as he has clearly played an important role for the team over the first half of this season".

"We wanted to perform, we wanted to have a reaction and our concentration was perhaps too much". It would have been good to have come back without the second goal but it was harsh and it was a bad moment.
