On the eve of the 2019 Detroit Auto Show, Cadillac has surprised the media with a first look at an upcoming electric crossover SUV, perhaps the first of many electric vehicles to come for the marque.

The all-new three-row vehicle will be a part of Cadillac's popular crossover and SUV lineup.

GM is vowing to reposition Cadillac as an EV brand. This will be the first model derived from GM's future EV platform.

"Cadillac's EV will hit the heart of the crossover market and meet the needs of customers around the world", Carlisle said.

The Cadillac EV's name and additional details will be revealed closer to launch. Overall, Cadillac will introduce new models at the rate of roughly one every six months through 2021. We've just seen the reveal of the XT6 and also in the pipeline are a redesigned Escalade plus new CT4 and CT5 sedans. We're told this platform will feature battery and drive units designed for "maximum usability" throughout GM cars across different countries. The electric Caddy crossover will be just the first in a range of vehicles to make use of the platform, which has been created to accommodate front-, rear- or all-wheel drive configurations.

GM's future EV platform, which Cadillac will be the first to use, will be flexible, allowing the company to respond quickly to customer preferences with a relatively short design and development lead time.

Cadillac's electric crossover is expected to be a mid-size model created to take on the Tesla Model X and offer buyers the choice of two or three rows of seats.
