"We're well into the flu season, " Fry said.

Health regulators have been trying to combat flu outbreaks in the United States and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first new flu medication in almost two decades past year.

Meanwhile, four people have died of the flu so far this season in IN, according to the state's department of health.

Typically, the flu season lasts from October to as late as May. About 70,000 to 84,000 people have been hospitalized with the flu, the agency said.

While the number of cases has decreased this week, those that were reported are spread out across a wider area. Getting vaccinated later, however, can still be beneficial and vaccination should continue to be offered throughout flu season, even into January or later.

And in Saskatchewan, public health officials are pleading with parents to get their children vaccinated after influenza killed three unvaccinated preschoolers in the province. Adult sicknesses and deaths are estimated.

In New Brunswick, where no children have died with a lab-confirmed diagnosis of influenza, the virus still seems to be targeting a younger demographic than in the last few seasons.

If you haven't gotten a flu shot, it's not too late. "Flu vaccines reduce the risk of flu illness and serious flu complications that can result in hospitalization and have been shown to be life-saving in children".

The CDC said that reported cases tend to increase in November before peaking between December and February. There are several influenza medications on the market now. People who are very sick or who are at high risk of serious flu complications and get flu symptoms should see a health care provider early in their illness for possible treatment with a flu antiviral drug.
