Exeter win sets up Munster showdown

Exeter revived their bid to qualify for the quarter-finals of the European Champions Cup with a 34-12 win over 14-man Castres at Sandy Park on Sunday.

Unless they beat Munster at Thomond Park - and deny them a losing bonus point, or collect a five-point maximum - the Irish heavyweights will win Pool Two.

But the Gallagher Premiership leaders still face a Herculean task to progress, needing victory over twice European champions Munster in Limerick next Saturday. With one win and a draw from their four games thus far, it is fair to say Rob Baxter's team have not looked all that convincing.

"It's positive that we focussed on our game and we worked hard to come through".

"We can genuinely talk this week about going and testing ourselves in one of Europe's iconic venues against one of Europe's iconic teams, in as close to a knockout as we could get".

"The biggest thing for us is to get emotionally recharged".

"It was nearly evident they had a real game-plan to go after certain people within the Gloucester team".

Castres' replacement prop Tudor Stroe was sent off midway through the second half for a swinging forearm into Chiefs centre Ollie Devoto's head.

But their response was impressive, as far from going into their shells, they hit back with an equalising try just four minutes later, with Canada worldwide Paris rounding off a slick passing move to cross unopposed.

"We spoke about having a fast start and we did that", Nowell, returning to action with a try after suffering a hamstring injury on England duty during the November internationals, told BT Sport.

Man of the match Jack Nowell said: "It's set up nicely for next week".

"We saw Jack picking and going and getting his hands on the ball, way more than a full-back normally would".

"Jack can play pretty much anywhere across the backline".

"There's certainly the possibility of him staying there for a little while now after playing so well".
