Manchester United have placed Atletico Madrid's Diego Simeone on their shortlist of candidates to become their next permanent manager should the Red Devils miss out on Mauricio Pochettino, according to a report in England.

However, with Tottenham keen to hold on to their manager and Chairman Daniel Levy reportedly having slapped a £50 million price tag on him, United are keen to sound out potential suitors to the role - like Atletico Madrid's Diego Simeone.

The Red Devils will return to Premier League action on Saturday with a home clash against Brighton at Old Trafford.

However, United are increasingly anxious that the Argentine could remain in north London and are considering alternatives, including caretaker manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and even England boss Gareth Southgate.

According to the same story, Simeone is now in negotiations with the La Liga side over a potential contract extension with 18 months left to run on his current deal at Atletico Madrid.

Since taking charge of Atleti in 2011, Simeone has won La Liga, the Copa del Rey and two Europa League crowns, as well as reaching a couple of Champions League finals.

Solskjaer also has a shot at getting the United job permanently, but he will need to maintain the side's stunning form - winning all five matches while playing attacking football - and pick up a trophy to have a serious shot.
