Ikea 'Phasing Out' Decorative Map After Forgetting To Include New Zealand

The map, reportedly spotted on sale at an outlet in Washington DC, US, was shared to Reddit by user Jibbles666 yesterday.

The furniture store has admitted responsibility.

"Ikea is responsible for securing correct and compliant motifs on all our products", a spokesperson said.

'We will take the necessary actions and the product is now being phased out from our stores'.

The timing couldn't be more awkward for the flat-pack furniture giant: the epic gaffe comes just weeks after Ikea announced its plans to expand into New Zealand at the end of 2018, and the "phase out" process has yet to reach its website, which still offers the incorrect map.

You can buy a multi-colored map from IKEA, so that the entire world is hanging above your sofa-with the exception of New Zealand, that is.

Ikea is launching a megastore in Auckland with 7000 products and a restaurant.

A commenter on the Reddit post questioned: "Wonder if they're going to sell these maps in the new Auckland store".

This is not the first time Ikea has advertised a misleading world map.

An Ikea map poster, minus New Zealand (off Reddit).

The New Zealand prime minister Jacinda Ardern has yet to weigh in on this particular incident, but she took part in last year's map campaign, co-starring in a video with Flight of the Conchords' Rhys Darby.

The failure to include the country on maps has become a running joke in New Zealand, with Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern a year ago launching the #GetNZonthemap video with the comedian Rhys Darby.

"New Zealand, where the bloody hell are ya?"

Marketing officer Justin Flitter created a Facebook page called "Bring Ikea to New Zealand" way back in April 2009, which has over 20,000 likes.

The inaccurate product is sold in both U.S. and Australian stores and commentators questioned whether it would be stocked in the New Zealand one.
