"It's probably a good thing for us", said Mickelson, who pleaded his case to continue despite darkness enveloping the course. I've got two hard holes coming up. The delays have pushed the final round to Monday where play will resume at 8 a.m. PST.

"It's not over yet", Paul Casey said.

After a rain-delayed start, Mickelson had produced a blemish-free round and holed six birdies to move to 18 under before play was called off.

Phil Mickelson and Paul Casey reflect on the decision to suspend play due to fading light. The final round started an hour late because of rain, and then was delayed two more hours when sunshine gave way to a hail storm that covered greens in white.

Mickelson stood at 18 under through 70 holes and was three shots clear of Paul Casey and Scott Stallings.

Thirteen of Mickelson's 43 PGA Tour victories have come in his home state of California.

"It's a tough golf course", Casey said.

That's what all those Mickelson fans must have been thinking after waiting through a morning hail storm to see him tee it up alongside Casey. "I've always found Pebble tough". Phil's put together a spectacular round of golf so far.

Casey's history with 54-hole leads will grow dismal if he doesn't do something spectacular himself. "I need to do something special".

"It's not over. We've got to finish it off, so I don't want to jump the gun and look ahead".

Less than two years from his 50 birthday, the old man did his best work by the sea as he birdied from 10 feet on the fourth that overlooks Carmel Bay, then scored from a foot on the ninth and from 11 feet on the 10th, the two holes facing Stillwater Cove. Casey and FedEx executive Don Colleran had a one-shot lead in the pro-am. He did so after Casey caught a flier and airmailed his approach over the left side of the green, making bogey.

"I know a lot can happen in these two holes, and they have happened in the past", Mickelson said. Mickelson took a two-shot lead with another par at the 12th, this time after Casey came up short with his tee shot and made bogey failing to get up and down from a bunker. "We had a three-month suspension of the tournament, came back and finished the final round, and I had my first victory here".
