Rival groups associated with the so-called Yellow Vest movement were involved in what appears to be a street brawl Saturday during the 13th week of protests against French President Emmanuel Macron.

The protest in the French capital has passed the National Assembly and will end up near the Eiffel Tower.

As scuffles broke out in front of the National Assembly and French police responded with tear gas, paramedics huddled around the injured protester at the National Assembly gates, providing emergency treatment and stopping bystanders from getting too close.

One young man who was trying to take pictures of the demonstration was injured on his left hand after riot officers fired tear gas into the crowd.

Police said 31 demonstrators had been arrested in the unrest.

"He wanted to bat it away so it didn't explode by his leg - and it went off when he touched it", he added.

In the south of France police blocked yellow vest leader Maxime Nicolle from crossing into Italy to join forces with Italian demonstrators.

"We put him to one side and called the street medics".

One protestor lost four fingers witnesses said he'd tried to handle a sting-ball grenade thrown by police. This was the 11th time he had marched with the movement, he told AFP.

"We have to win to have more social and fiscal justice in this country", said Mairesse, who was carrying a placard calling for the reimposition of a wealth tax on high earners repealed by Macron.

Thousands of protesters also turned out in the French cities of Marseille and Montpellier as well as Bordeaux and Toulouse and in several cities in France's north and west. But the Interior Ministry said the protests are much smaller than last week's. Recent polls show Macron's approval ratings are rising.

Yellow vest protesters run away from tear gas fired by riot police as they keep pressure on French President Emmanuel Macron's government, for the 13th straight weekend of demonstrations, during a demonstration in Paris, France, on February 9, 2019.
