But no one could have guessed that it would be a billion dollar blockbuster and surpass The Dark Knight Rises' worldwide box office.

It looks like the writer of Aquaman will be on the franchise for some time as he has been tapped to write the DC film's sequel.

According to the Wrap, Aquaman co-writer, David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, will be returning to pen the sequel for DC. Johnson-McGoldrick co-wrote the first film alongside Will Beall, from a story by Beall, Geoff Johns, and James Wan.

THR notes that Wan is now making his own deal to return for Aquaman 2 as an executive producer alongside Peter Safran. Johnson-McGoldrick began working on the script three years ago after reading "Aquaman" comic books while on the set of "The Conjuring 2".

From Warner Bros. Pictures and director James Wan comes an action-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, "Aquaman", starring Jason Momoa in the title role.

Warner Bros. also announced last week that it was developing "The Trench" as a spinoff horror movie to "Aquaman". Wan and Safran will produce "The Trench", which is being developed as a lower-cost version of "Aquaman" without the main cast involved.
