The carrier immediately brought the baby to his vehicle to try and warm her up.

KFSN-TV reports the hours-old baby was wearing only a onesie when a newspaper carrier found her before dawn Monday on the center line of the road in Madera County. He saw that it was a baby dressed in a onesie without a diaper and lying on its back.

A newspaper delivery man in California found a newborn baby girl in the middle of a roadway on Monday while he was delivering copies of the Fresno Bee just outside the city.

He immediately called 911 and waited with the baby until an ambulance arrived, fearful the little girl might be taken by the coyotes common to the area.

The newborn, who was only hours old, was rushed to Valley Children's Hospital and is now being treated at the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

The child is hospitalized in good condition and is expected to fully recover.

"The baby appeared to have been born during the night and is now being treated by the Valley Children's neonatal intensive care unit", said Pogue.

The Madera County Sheriff's Office is handling the investigation now and working to track down the newborn's mother.

A suspect allegedly approached a man as he walked down the road at 4.30am that morning and asked him to take her child.

In its Facebook post, the Madera County Sheriff's Office said the mother is believed to be "a Hispanic female adult, possibly in her early 20s", according to witnesses, who were not able to provide a precise physical description. She left the scene in a small white SUV of unknown make or model. It allows caregivers to surrender an infant within 72 hours of birth to a safe place - a hospital or fire station - anonymously and with no questions asked.

Drop-off points include designated fire stations and hospitals.
