On why the newest Major League Baseball rule proposals are out of whack.

After an offseason in which they traded for starting pitcher James Paxton, and signed both shortstop Troy Tulowitzki and relievers Adam Ottavino and Zach Britton, New York is reportedly one of the teams which continue to make a run at free agent Manny Machado.

While the offer is aggressive, Duquette notes the problem for the Yankees is "a lot of teams are in that range also" and "another club has gone further than that".

Duquette also opined that he doesn't think the Yankees are going to be the highest bidder and Machado will have "other options that are probably higher in other cities", specifically naming the Philadelphia Phillies.

"If there's a narrative that we're not spending money and being cheap, it's just false", Steinbrenner said Thursday, via ESPN. "I mean, we're well above $200 million (in payroll) - we're at $220 (million) right now - and we're well above where we were previous year".

The White Sox reportedly offered Machado a contract around $175 million and Duquette reported most offers are similar to the Yankees' proposal with at least one team offering him more than $220 million.

"Fans should keep an open mind that I'm never done until I'm done, and that's usually not until Opening Day", Steinbrenner added.
