Icardi stripped of Inter Milan captaincy

Inter Milan take the captain's armband away from centre-forward Mauro Icardi, who continues to be linked with a move away from the club.

"Icardi was called up, and has decided not to travel to Vienna", the coach explained to Sky Sport. It has been a tough, painful decision which he probably has not taken well, made with the team's well-being in mind.

Inter face Rapid Vienna in the Europa League round of 32 on Thursday and Icardi is not in the squad for the game.

"The things going on around Icardi have disturbed us, both him and the team which he used to captain".

The Slovenia worldwide, 34, joined Inter from Udinese in 2012 while Icardi arrived from Sampdoria in 2013, taking over as captain from Andrea Ranocchia in 2015. "We hope that the players react properly".

He's hit 122 goals in 210 matches whilst also winning two Capocannoniere awards, Serie A's top goalscorer award.

There's no doubt that Inter are on the right path to return to their former heights but they still remain a sleeping giant in the shadow of Juventus.

Chelsea are one of a host of clubs linked with a transfer move for Icardi, who would fetch a monster fee for Inter as one of the best forwards in the world.

One particular bugbear has been Icardi and Nara's apparent sustained courtship of Real Madrid, with the Argentine a regular visitor to the Spanish capital and a guest at the Bernabeu for December's Copa Libertadores final between Boca Juniors and River Plate. "I can not understand if these bad things come from outside or within".
