They had questioned the two brothers, Ola and Abel Osundairo, last week but the pair were released on Friday and are said to be still co-operating with the investigation.

Sources say that the brothers told authorities they had bought the items used in the attack at Jussie's direction.

Jussie Smollett, an actor known for playing Jamal Lyon in U.S. hip-hop drama Empire, has been catapulted to an worldwide platform after his claims of being a victim of a racist and homophobic attack have turned into one of Hollywood's most baffling mysteries.

Meanwhile, The Associated Press reports that attorneys for Smollett say their client feels "victimized" by the suggestion that he'd staged the assault, insisting, "Nothing is further from the truth and anyone claiming otherwise is lying".

Smollett initially claimed that he was attacked at 2 a.m. on January 29 by two men who were wearing ski masks.

When the alleged attack was widely reported, politicians and celebrities voiced outrage over the apparent hate crime.

On Sunday, the Bronx-based rapper uploaded an Instagram live video where she, while eating lobster, pondered the latest developments in the unpredictable and divisive case. Like you don't have to do that. They also reportedly said they rehearsed the attack "days" before it happened. I really did. I know that there is a deep, dark racist history in Chicago and, if proved true, this would be just one more point on the list. Like why would you do that bro? According to prosecutors, his alleged racial and homophobic attack will be headed to a grand jury next week.

Booker, who is running for president, was one of several Democrats to weigh in on initial reports of the attack. I pray that Jussie has a speedy recovery [and] that justice is served. "May we all commit to ending this hate once [and] for all".

Still, a law enforcement source told Deadline on Sunday that they have a "sense of frustration" over the lack of formal response for a further sit-down to go over new evidence that has come to light on the matter. Smollett did not originally call the police, but when he did, he was less than cooperative and did not hand over his phone. It can't, ' said director Ava DuVernay.

Chicago PD has not yet confirmed any of this, and Smollett maintains his innocence. "The department that covered up shooting Laquan McDonald over a dozen times?" That operated an off-site torture facility? That one? I'll wait. "And I think that once the investigation has concluded then we can all comment, but I'm not going to comment until I know the outcome of the investigation".

The two young men might have hurt him if they were serious.

"Yessir. I hear you".

Filmmaker Ava DuVernay said she is waiting for more information too. "I wrote that there are inconsistencies".

"In that interview, [Smollett] specifically says, 'Yeah, those two guys on the surveillance footage, those are the guys that attacked me, ' so now he's sort of boxed in", Abrams said. I wanted to believe him with every fiber of my being, most of all because the consequences if he were lying were nearly too bad to contemplate.
