The measles outbreak in Canterbury has now infected 25 people, and the Canterbury District Health Board says the number is likely to rise in the coming days.

While measles was officially eradicated in Canada in 1998, there have been periodic outbreaks in B.C.in communities where vaccination is low, including an outbreak in Chilliwack in 2014.

"Unimmunised people who come within two metres of an infectious person, however briefly, have a 90 per cent chance of contracting measles", the board said.

Anyone exposed who might be at risk may notice their first symptoms about 10 to 12 days following exposure.

Other symptoms that can develop during the initial stage, include a runny nose, a cough, red and watery eyes, and small white spots inside the cheeks.

Those who think they may have contracted measles should call ahead to their doctor's office or hospital before attending so that measures to prevent the virus' further spread can be implemented.

The best way to protect yourself and your loved ones against measles is to ensure vaccinations are up to date.

Clinics in the central-eastern region ran out of vaccines after the outbreak started in late February, with an additional 18,000 MMR vaccines expected to be brought in by Wednesday.

Measles is highly infectious and is spread by an airborne virus.

Measles can cause serious complications such as deafness from ear infections, or deadly pneumonia and swelling of the brain.
