She was nominated by three Norwegian MPs.

Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai in 2014 became the youngest victor of the prize, at the age of 17.

Greta Thunberg, 16, has been hailed by Freddy Andre Oevstegaard and two other members of the Socialist Left Party for her cause to stop climate change, which 'will be the cause of wars, conflict and refugees'.

"Greta Thunberg has launched a mass movement in which I see, perhaps, the main contribution to peace".

What are the school protests?

Greta Thunberg outside the Swedish parliament in Stockholm. It's estimated that hundreds of thousands of students will take part.

So far, there have been regular walkouts around the world, including in countries likes Germany, Belgium, the UK, France, Australia and Japan.

One day last summer, Greta Thunberg skipped school and went to sit outside the Swedish parliament with a homemade banner that read "skolstrejk för klimatet" (school strike for climate).

Since then, she has been missing lessons most Fridays to stage her regular protests.

After her speeches at the United Nations climate change conference in Poland and at the Davos forum, she became an example for many young people all over the world, who since have promoted similar initiatives. She has asked world leaders not to ignore the impending consequences of runaway climate change.

National politicians and some university professors can nominate candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize. Any person who meets the nomination criteria is considered.

The prize is announced in October and awarded in December in the Norwegian capital, Oslo. The Nobel committee doesn't comment on nominations, but Thunberg is up for the 2019 prize along with 301 other candidates, including 223 individuals and 78 organizations.

The names of nominators and nominees are not normally made public until 50 years have elapsed, it adds.
