Italy bans unvaccinated kids from school

Italian parents have been told to keep their kids home from school unless they are able to prove they have been properly vaccinated - or risk having to open up their wallet.

"Now, children who are not vaccinated will endanger other children at school who are too small for vaccines or can not be vaccinated because they suffer from immunosuppressive diseases". The consequences for failing to comply with the legislation reportedly varies depending on how old the child is.

The last day for parents to turn in vaccine documents was Monday.

The law was slated to go into effect at the beginning of the school year in September, but Italy's anti-establishment Five Star government voted to amend the law, meaning it could not go into effect ahead of the new school year.

In Bologna, suspension letters were sent to the parents of 300 children.

Health Minister Giulia Grillo said the rules were now simple: "No vaccine, no school". ". No vaccine, no school". The mandatory vaccinations include chickenpox, polio, mumps, rubella, and - perhaps most crucially at this time - measles.

Regional authorities are taking care of the situation through different ways, report Italian media.

According to BBC, the new law came amid a surge in measles cases - but Italian officials say vaccination rates have improved since it was introduced.

"Italy is part of a global trend of distrust in mediators-doctors and scientists-who can interpret and explain data", La Sapienza University of Rome history of medicine and bioethics teacher Andrea Grignolio told CNN in 2018. That's the point at which so many people have been vaccinated against a given disease that those that have forgone their shots will still be unlikely to catch it, but it's hard to see what goal a "flexible" system serves beyond preserving opt-outs for antivaxxers.

The law was implemented as a response to a recent spike in measles outbreaks.
