In comparison, the USA rate for January is 4 percent, an increase of one-tenth of a percentage point.

While the Department of Workforce Solutions earlier had reported the December unemployment rate as 4.7 percent, it was corrected to the higher number during an annual "benchmarking" in which the federal government takes into account newer figures than those compiled in statistics released throughout the year.

Vermont labor officials say the unemployment rate in the state is at an all-time low with just 2.5 percent of Vermonters without a job in January.

"People are working in Alabama, said state Labor Secretary Fitzgerald Washington". "Employers are hiring in Alabama".

Possible reasons for the increase in January were the federal government shutdown, which lasted from December 22 to Jan. 25, and the number of seasonal workers who were no longer employed after the holiday season, said Stacy Johnston, spokeswoman for the state Department of Workforce Solutions. A year ago, this number measured 86,250.

The agency says the rate marks record low unemployment in Alabama. "Both the construction, information, and manufacturing sectors saw significant increases from January 2018 to January 2019".

The construction sector experienced job growth measuring 5.0% over-the-year, the information sector experienced growth measuring 3.9% and the manufacturing sector experienced job growth measuring 1.4% over-the-year.

Counties with the lowest unemployment rates are: Shelby County at 3.2%, Marshall and Cullman Counties at 3.7%, and Tuscaloosa, Morgan, Madison, and Elmore Counties at 3.8%. The highest rates included Wilcox County at 10.5 percent, Lowndes County at 8.2 percent, and Clarke County at 7.9 percent.

"On its face, the idea of a "historically low unemployment rate" sounds like a positive outcome and for current job seekers, it is". Major cities with the highest unemployment rates are: Selma at 8.8%, Prichard at 7.5%, and Anniston at 6.1%.
