"This moment of peril produces, perhaps, the greatest moment of promise for this country", he said in the video which was posted on the El Paso Times website.

Democrat Beto O'Rourke has announced he is running for USA president, joining a crowded field of candidates vying to challenge Donald Trump in 2020. "I don't see how we're able to meet any of the fundamental challenges that we have as a country without, in part, harnessing the power of the market".

O'Rourke ran for a Senate seat representing the state of Texas in 2018, losing by less than three percentage points to Sen.

According to the latest edition of Vanity Fair, Mr O'Rourke said: "You can probably tell that I want to run. I do". He seems like a guy who knows how to say what his audience wants to hear.

Since his Senate bid ended, O'Rourke has worked to keep himself in the public eye, regularly staying in touch with his supporters and sitting for an interview with Oprah Winfrey.

Should he dive in on Thursday, he will be entering a crowded pool of Democrats seeking to oust Republican President Donald Trump.

Of late, O'Rourke has tried to distance himself from some left-leaning candidates, such as Sanders and Senator Elizabeth Warren of MA, whom Trump has derided as "socialists".

Starting with the Iowa caucuses next year, the Democrat who amasses the majority of delegates nationwide in a series of nominating contests will be nominated at the party's convention in the summer, and will likely face Trump in November's general election.
