"We have proposed Greta Thunberg because if we do nothing to halt climate change it will be the cause of wars, conflict and refugees", Norwegian Socialist Left MP Freddy Andre Ovstegard told AFP.

"The massive movement Greta has set in motion is a very important peace contribution", he added.

Hirsi, who lists on Twitter page that she is the head of the Minnesota High School Democrats and several other left-wing youth-based organizations, said in a recent interview with Grist that she is looking to "change the conversation" on issues such as the Green New Deal by organizing the strike.

What are the school protests?

While numerous protesters are likely to be university students, a large number are also expected to be high school students.

Following the #FridaysForFuture movement, started by the Swedish teen, Jodi is calling on Derry students to "strike" tomorrow between 1pm and 3pm and gather in Guildhall Square to make their voices heard about the state of the earth they, as young people, will inherit.

So far, there have been regular walkouts around the world, including in countries likes Germany, Belgium, the UK, France, Australia and Japan.

Last month, the Washington Post profiled Alexandria Villasenor, a New York City student who has spent every Friday since December in front of the United Nations building to protest climate change inaction.

Since then, she has been missing lessons most Fridays to stage her regular protests.

"On climate change, we have to acknowledge that we have failed", she told global economic leaders in Davos.

National politicians, worldwide officials, academics and previous winners are among those who can nominate potential recipients.

There are 301 candidates (223 individuals, and 78 organizations) for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize, according to the Nobel Foundation.

If Greta wins the prize, she will be the youngest person to ever become a Nobel laureate.
