Early exit: World number one Novak Djokovic waves to the crowd after an upset loss to 39th-ranked Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany in the third round of the ATP Indian Wells Masters.

The day's other heavyweight bout sees fourth-seeded Roger Federer - who is tied with Djokovic on a record five Indian Wells titles - take on former world number three Stan Wawrinka.

Speaking on his victory over Nole, Kohlschreiber said, "I think I put out a pretty good strategy on the court, very clever serve, good return game - it was a good day".

Djokovic, playing his first tournament since lifting his record seventh Australian Open title in January, knew he'd have to work his way back into top form.

Kohlschreiber posted his first victory over a top-ranked player, advancing to a fourth-round match against France's Gael Monfils.

Moments after world No 1 Novak Djokovic was beaten by Philipp Kohlschreiber, the Aussie took to social media to highlight what unnecessary bias in coverage of big name players.

Notably, the match was delayed by rain on Monday, as Kohlschreiber was confident and displayed crisp gameplay on Tuesday morning.

Nadal, a three-time victor of the Indian Wells title, next faces Serbian qualifier Filip Krajinovic, who ousted 14th-seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 6-2.

While it is being assumed it was just one of the bad days for Nole, there are debates that Nole was under pressure due to off-field controversy.

In addition to the top seed falling on the women's side of the draw, the second seed, Simona Halep lost to teenager Marketa Vondrousova 6-2, 3-6, 6-2. Her triumph in Australia made her No. 1 for the first time, but her time at the top has been rocky.

"I really wasn't focusing so much on her".

This was his career win over Djokovic in 10 head to head.

Play will begin at 11 a.m. with second-seeded Rafael Nadal of Spain facing the Serbian qualifier Filip Krajinovic.

Djokovic led that game 30-15, but capped a long rally with a forehand long then double faulted before pushing a forehand wide on break point.

The Serbian broke his racket in anger after dropping the first set to Kohlschreiber.

Nevertheless, he thought he was poised for a deeper run, something he'll now try to achieve in doubles alongside Italian playing partner Fabio Fognini. The 20th-seeded Muguruza upset seventh-seeded Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands, 5-7, 6-1, 6-4, on Tuesday.
