The modern-day remake of the beloved Norman Lear comedy followed a Cuban-American family led by a divorced, former military mom (Justina Machado), who was raising two teenagers - Elena (Isabella Gomez) and Alex (Marcel Ruiz) - with the help of her traditional Cuban mother Lydia (EGOT victor Rita Moreno).

" has been canceled at Netflix after three seasons, Variety has learned.

The news was met with disappointment by the show's legions of admirers, especially its Latinx fans who were treated to a rare reflection of their own families and lives on television. "The outpouring of love for this show is a firm reminder to us that we must continue finding ways to tell these stories".

Our worst fears have come true: Netflix did not renew the Cuban family sitcom One Day at a Time. I'm so grateful to have played Penelope Alvarez. Will One Day at a Time be saved? And we keep going so that we can hopefully do it again & again. Heartbreak is part of it.

"We don't deserve One Day At A Time and One Day At A Time doesn't deserve this", TV Guide features editor Krutika Mallikarjuna said on Twitter.

Another user expressed how sad they were that this show, which tackled an important topic such as depression, will no longer be made.

One Day at a Time co-creator has issued a statement following the series' cancellation, stating how their "hearts are very heavy". "No joke actually I will be more upset than I have ever been over any show cancellation literally ever GOD such a good f****** show another season I'd like to HAVE IT [goodnight]". "While it's disappointing that more viewers didn't discover One Day at a Time, I believe the series will stand the test of time".

On Twitter, executive producer Mike Royce spoke out about the news, expressing gratitude to One Day at a Time fans and revealing that Sony, which produced the show, had plans to shop it to another network.
