The former Manchester United and England midfielder took over as Oldham boss on February 11, and leaves the club after just 31 days in charge at Boundary Park.

"It's is with great regret I have made a decision to leave the club with immediate effect", Scholes said.

One of the conditions Scholes gave his boyhood club before taking over, was no interference from the owner Abdallah Lemsagam.

Paul Scholes has left Oldham Athletic with immediate effect, after just seven games in charge of the League Two club. "I hoped to at the very least, see out my initial term of 18 months as the manager", Scholes said in a statement.

Early signs were positive, the 44 year old began his managerial career with a 4-1 win against Yeovil Town, but that was to be his only victory, the latest defeat coming against league leaders Lincoln City on Tuesday. However, after barely a month in charge, he's left the club.

"It unfortunately became clear that I would not be able to operate as I intended and was led to believe prior to taking on the role", he added.

The club said in a statement: "Oldham Athletic Football Club can confirm that Paul Scholes has resigned from his position as first team manager with immediate effect".

Oldham are now 14th in League Two, having picked up just six points in seven games under Scholes, with his sole win coming against Yeovil Town in his first game as manager.
