A witness said Friday many people have been killed in a mass shooting at a mosque in the New Zealand city of Christchurch. There is no official confirmation on casualties.

Tamim Iqbal Khan, a member of the team, tweeted that the "entire team got saved from active shooters".

ESPNcricinfo journalist Mohammad Isam reports Bangladesh's Test cricketers were about to enter the mosque for a prayer session.

Several minutes after they were barred from getting off the bus, the players escaped and ran through Hagley Park.

Speaking to New Zealand Herald, Bangladesh's team strength and conditioning coach, Mario Villavarayen said: "The players are shaken up but fine".

Emergency services personnel assist one of the victims.

Mark Nichols told the Herald he heard about five gunshots and that a Friday prayer goer returned fire with a rifle or shotgun. They were at the ground and just started running.

Much of the coaching staff were back in the team hotel while the head coach Steve Rhodes was at the ground.

A spokeswoman did not know how many patients were expected, adding it was an "evolving situation".

Bangladesh and New Zealand are scheduled to begin the third and final Test at Hagley Oval on Saturday.

A New Zealand Cricket spokesperson said it was an "unfolding situation" around if the match would go ahead.

There are reports that a second mosque has been evacuated.

ABC News quoted eyewitness reports that up to 30 people were either dead or injured, but stressed that the figures were unconfirmed. One man said the scene at the mosque was chaotic. I'm speaking from experience, I'm speaking from what I've heard. "I ran behind the mosque", he said. "Lots of police and ambulance have come, and they did not allow us to go in the mosque or to get close to it", he said.

Earlier, he helped three people who had been shot at the mosque.

The police recommended that residents across Christchurch remain off the streets and said schools would be locked down until further notice.

New Zealand Police have stormed the area and are urging anyone in the area to stay indoors.
