Every single artwork was sold at last night's competitive auction, which Christie's said was "a tribute to both George Michael's eye for contemporary art and the depth of feeling for an artist whose songbook of classic tracks defined an era".

A spokesman for Michael's trustees said they were "delighted" that the millions raised in the auctions would go towards causes he championed, according to the Evening Standard.

Works by Michael Craig-Martin sold for a combined £277,500.

Christie's global president Jussi Pylkkänen acted as the evening's auctioneer.

"Philanthropic work was hugely important for George and it was his wish that this work would continue", he added. He said: "To realise such a significant sum is what we've all been working towards".

In the lead-up to the auction key works from Michael's collection were shown in New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong and Shanghai, before returning to London where the sale of catalogs and limited-edition tote bags raised a further £250,000 ($332,000) for Michael's philanthropic works. "We hope the charities who will ultimately benefit will be pleased with the outcome".

Michael had amassed a collection of more than 200 works of art before his death in 2016, the Press Association reports.

"The collection spoke volumes about George Michael, a man who touched millions with his music, his honesty, his bravery and his kindness", the release read. This was partly due to the autobiographical nature of so numerous works within it, but also because it revealed the extent to which he had supported his fellow British artists.

The action was held at Christie's in London and included works by Tracey Emin and Damien Hirst.

The eye-catching piece features a white dove frozen in formaldehyde as if in mid-flight.

Meanwhile, the touching piece George Loves Kenny by Tracey Emin was sold for £347,250.

Bridget Riley's 1982 painting Songbird, the first major work Michael acquired, fetched £791,250, while Hurricane, a 2007 work by Emin, sold for £431,250.
