New Zealand Police Commissioner Mike Bush confirmed in a press conference on March 15 that the death toll had risen to 49, with 41 worshipers gunned down at the Deans Avenue mosque in Christchurch during Friday prayers. In addition, 48 people have been injured and are now being treated at a Christchurch hospital.

"The regulation of guns in New Zealand is categorised as restrictive", say the authors of the database.

YouTube star Pewdiepie made an effort to distance himself from a perpetrator in the fatal Christchurch, New Zealand mosque shootings after the attacker reportedly called out "subscribe to Pewdiepie" during the terror incident. Friday's shootings are the worst act of violence in New Zealand in three decades, Ardern said. Forty-one people were killed at one mosque, and seven people were killed at the second mosque.

The suspect appeared before a closed session at the city's district court on Saturday morning local time, the day after the massacre, which also injured 42, including a four-year-old child.

More than 40 people injured in the shootings are being treated in hospitals, Ardern said, and two of them remain in a critical condition. As New Zealand has stood by us so we stand shoulder to shoulder with them, and with Muslims in New Zealand, here in the United Kingdom and around the world.

That said, the two countries are dramatically different in size, with New Zealand having a population of less than 4.8 million people while the USA has an estimated 327.2 million people, but the gun violence rates are notably different when looked at with comparitive sizes.

The attack has been condemned across the globe, with leaders from Pakistan, Turkey, Britain, Germany, Israel, Jordan, Japan and the European Union sending their condolences and offering support to New Zealand.
