Norris, who is one of three rookies on the Formula 1 grid in 2019, impressed in his maiden F1 qualifying outing for the British marque, beating both Nico Hulkenberg and Daniel Ricciardo to secure a place in Q3 after initially struggling for pace, setting the 18th fastest time in all three practice sessions earlier in the weekend.

Norris P8 performance brought McLaren its best result since Fernando Alonso's seventh place position achieved in qualifying at Monaco previous year.

"I enjoyed it [qualifying] to a point but I was so nervous that took away a lot of the enjoyment". But I managed to put the laps together today - the team were fantastic. I've got a long race ahead of me tomorrow... and we do need to do a lot of work to maintain these Q3s.

"Our aim was to get into Q2 but it turned out to be even better, and it's a great confidence boost for everyone".

Norris said that his aim at the start of Saturday was merely to get out of the first part of qualifying, but after reaching the top 10, he is now determined to prove it can be repeated.

"I've got a long race ahead of me tomorrow".

"I think it's massive to see that it is possible to do it and we have in some ways moved forwards from a year ago". Not as much as we need to but I feel like I really maximised everything.
