Saints to sign defensive tackle Malcom Brown

The Saints agreed to a deal with former Patriots defensive tackle Malcom Brown on Thursday, adding a big piece at a suddenly big position of need.

He performed well for New England in his four-year career, though his production tailed off in 2018 as he split time with trade acquisition Danny Shelton.

It's an expected move, but still a somewhat-disappointing one.

Current Saints defensive tackle Sheldon Rankins tore his Achilles in the divisional round of the playoffs two months ago, and may not be 100% at the start of next season. He served as an effective run-stuffer, but never developed into the pass-rusher New England thought he could be when the team selected him. Brown is a 25-year-old nose tackle specialist, tipping the scales at 6 feet 2, 320 pounds. Brown is expected to replace Tyeler Davison as the new starting defensive tackle for New Orleans.

The Saints were also hosting defensive tackle Mario Edwards on a visit, but it's unclear if Brown's deal will impact the interest in Edwards. Any player would have struggled to replace a star like Wilfork, but like it or not, the bar was set high, and Brown never quite achieved it as a Patriot.
