More than halfway through his nearly seven-hour spacewalk, Canadian astronaut David Saint-Jacques' mission appeared to be going smoothly as he and his USA partner Anne McClain completed half the tasks on their list.

And it's safe to say his experience was - wait for it - out of this world.

For the next 6.5 hours, the two spacewalkers will perform upgrades to the station.

David Saint-Jacques and Anne McClain pose with the spacesuits they will wear on their Monday spacewalk.

They concluded their spacewalk and returned inside the orbiting laboratory at 2 pm ET, marking the 216th spacewalk in the history of the International Space Station.

A photo posted to Twitter by the Canadian astronaut shows off the sheer size of our planet, as it glows beautifully behind him.

Saint-Jacques, 49, joins an exclusive group of astronauts by becoming just the fourth Canadian to complete such a mission and the first from the country to do so since 2007.

Williams said the astronauts need to take their time while in space.

"The primary objective is always to do science, but there's a lot of work going on there just to maintain the operations of the space station", Podwalski said. The pair successfully installed new lithium ion batteries and completed tasks aimed at improving power supply.

"Once he's done, we'll be able to come down with Canadarm2 and Dextre at the tip and robotically finish moving those batteries around", Podwalski said.

Saint-Jacques' movements were visible through a helmet camera, giving viewers watching live online the astronaut's perspective. "You have to move really slowly to maintain control". "I told David, 'You're going to get the ideal tour, ' " he said. "That's the mark of a highly experienced spacewalker, already".

Spacewalk begins at 8:05 a.m. EST (1305 GMT).

Williams noted that astronauts spend years training, getting into shape and training underwater to mimic the choreography.

Astronaut David Saint-Jacques will become the first Canadian spacewalker in 12 years when he embarks on a roughly seven-hour mission planned for today. He is scheduled to return to Earth in June.
