The total number of people infected is now 96. It's possible we could see reports appear from other bordering states, but the outbreak appears to be localized to the eastern portion of the US.

Eleven people involved in the mysterious outbreak have been hospitalized. Symptoms include diarrhea, which can be bloody, severe stomach cramps and vomiting. Thankfully, no deaths have been reported.

Illnesses started on dates from March 2, 2019, to March 26, 2019. The source of this particular outbreak remains a mystery, making it hard for the public to avoid the illness. The CDC continues its investigation of the outbreak, which hasn't been linked to any particular source at this time. In Georgia, there are 17 reported cases of the strain.

The states reporting cases of E. coli illness linked to this outbreak are Georgia (17 patients), Kentucky (46), OH (5), Tennessee (26) and Virginia (2). The patients range in age from 1 to 81 years old. The CDC, state health departments, the US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service and the US Food and Drug Administration are investigating the outbreak.

"To kill harmful germs, cook beef steaks and roasts to an internal temperature of at least 145 degrees Fahrenheit and allow to rest for three minutes after you remove meat from the grill or stove", the CDC advises. Federal and state regulatory officials use that information to guide efforts to identify a contaminated food and trace it to its source. Officials say the best preventative measures are hand washing, cooking meats thoroughly and washing all fruits and vegetables.

Lettuce from other parts of the USA and Mexico is safe to eat, the CDC says.

Avoid raw milk, other unpasteurized dairy products, and unpasteurized juices.
