Arsenal manager Unai Emery has revealed it was a conversation with Watford boss Javi Gracia that convinced him to take over from Arsene Wenger at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal's away form has been a cause for concern, however.

"When the possibility opened to sign here, the first coach, the first person in the football world I called was him", Emery told a press conference of Gracia.

But Emery himself had already sounded out Gracia about life as a Premier League boss as his former Real Sociedad team-mate had been appointed at Watford six months earlier.

"I also met with (Manchester City midfielder) David Silva in Valencia a year ago and he said to me, "Coach, if you can, come to England, it is the best football and the best atmosphere for you also".

Asked if poor results away from home were due to a psychological problem, the Spaniard replied: 'But we are fourth at the moment and we are playing to be in the top four. Yes, it's much better, the coach is relaxed, we know that when we have to train, we train, but when the training ends, we relax, we laugh.

"For example we had dinner, their coaches and with our coaches, one day in St Albans in September".

Gracia's first full season in Hertfordshire has seen Watford amass a record Premier League points tally and remain in the chase for seventh place and will culminate in an FA Cup final against Manchester City.

"This team have a good mentality and they are improving, we are improving and the table is giving us this answer - we are improving".

'I think we are showing we are competitive and have a good mentality. "It's very important to the whole team".
