If he plays in a game for the club this postseason (which, again, is expected) then they'll burn the first year of his three-year, entry-level contract.

The Colorado Avalanche are hoping defenseman Cale Makar can do for them what he did for UMass this season.

Colorado tied the series 1-1 Saturday night, while Makar, who is from Calgary, and the Minutemen were losing to Minnesota Duluth 3-0 in the NCAA title game.

He joined Sunday, which is 661 days from when he was drafted with the fourth pick of the 2017 NHL Draft at the United Center in Chicago. Makar was also named the 2019 Hobey Baker Award victor, becoming the first player in school history to win college hockey's top individual prize.

The 20-year-old Makar finished first among NCAA defensemen with 49 points. He was the top scoring defenseman in the nation and second among all players with a plus-33.

"Cale obviously had a tremendous season, winning the Hobey Baker and getting his team to the Frozen Four", said Avs general manager Joe Sakic. "We are excited to have him join our team".

The Avalanche squared their best-of-seven series against the Flames Saturday night at 1-1 thanks to an overtime victor from Nathan MacKinnon.
