Police have said the boy remains in the hospital with serious injuries. There was blood; the boy was not moving.

'Additional information from witnesses indicated the 5-year-old might have been pushed or thrown, ' Bloomington Chief of Police Jeff Potts said. The child suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to an area hospital. "Immediately, my thoughts were: how can something like this happen?" "Thank you again for all of your support, we are truly gracious to be surrounded by a community that reaches out to help those in need", the family friend said.

Authorities haven't released the boy's name. He added that he couldn't go into detail about the child's condition.

'This was a senseless act and words can not truly express our profound shock and sadness, ' the Mall of America said in a statement on Friday.

A 24-year-old suspect was arrested in connection with the child's fall, and police said he either threw or pushed him off a balcony.

"I just hope that little guy turns out OK", witness Michael Baumann told local TV station ABC 5. "I just, you wonder. how could anybody do that?"

Landen was grabbed and thrown from the balcony onto the mall's tile flooring on Friday morning; Emmanuel Deshawn Aranda, of Minneapolis, has been charged with attempted homicide.

The suspect, a 24-year-old man, was later caught and is now in custody. A criminal complaint says in one case, he was suspected of "throwing things off the upper level of the mall to the lower level".

Aranda also was accused of walking into a mall store and sweeping his hand across a display table, breaking glasses. Two misdemeanors stemmed from incidents at the mall in 2015. When management intervened, Aranda grew enraged.

He was arrested on six misdemeanor charges.

At the news conference Saturday, Potts said his police department had an additional encounter with Aranda, in which he refused to pay his bill at a restaurant.

Police don't believe Aranda knew the boy's family.

"A monster of a man threw him from a 3rd floor balcony at the mall", the boy's cousin, April, posted on Instagram, the Daily Mail reported.

"This is a horrific situation", Potts said.

"It's jaw dropping", said witness Brian Johnson.

'Please pray for my cousins attractive son Landen, ' she wrote. "Everyone here right now, please pray".
