In London, organisers say they expect thousands to take part in peaceful acts of civil disobedience, bringing widespread disruption to the capital.

But it appeared that only thousands, rather than tens of thousands, of people had gathered by the time the protests began at 11am today - with Parliament Square (bottom left) and Piccadilly Circus their other two targets.

The group Extinction Rebellion is trying to block five central London locations Monday to demand the British government declare a climate emergency.

"We would encourage people to check their journeys before they travel".

"This will be a full-scale festival of creative resistance, with people's assemblies, art actions, stage performances, talks, workshops, food and family spaces", the group says on its website.

"We don't want to disrupt people, but our government's failure over the last 30 years leaves us no choice", an Extinction Rebellion spokesperson said. "We wish to make peace with ourselves by making peace with our neighbour Earth and with our God". They plan to engage in acts of non-violent civil disobedience against governments in capital cities around the world.

Monday will see people in at least 80 cities in more than 33 countries hold similar demonstrations on the same environmental issues, campaigners said.

Hundreds of protesters slept in tents in Hyde Park overnight and many more from around the United Kingdom are expected to join them at five makeshift camps across London for the protest, expected to last at least a week.

A spokeswoman for The Royal Parks said Extinction Rebellion had not asked for permission to begin the protest in the park and that camping is not allowed.

Police advised Londoners to leave extra time for their journeys because of possible delays caused by the protest. No arrests have been made.

The Met said it had "appropriate policing plans" in place for the demonstrations and officers from across the force would be used "to support the public order operation".
