Tom Kuhnhackl, who had a goal in the opening minute of the game waved off for offside, almost won it for the Islanders 1:12 into the extra period as he crashed into Murray and the puck crossed the goal line - but not before the net came loose.

Josh Bailey sent the fans home happy with an Islanders win, scoring the OT victor 4:39 into the extra frame.

"We just stayed to it".

The Penguins will be facing the New York Islanders for the first time in the playoffs since 2013 in which the Penguins defeated them in six games. Game 2 is scheduled for Friday night at the Coliseum.

Coach Mike Sullivan's decision to split the pair up, playing Malkin with Jared McCann and Patric Hornqvist and Kessel with Dominik Simon and Nick Bjugstad, paid dividends for one night.

"It worked out well for me, anyway, because I was a little ways back and exhausted", Bailey said about the play.

In the last three years, most of the Penguins' roster has seen more postseason time than many of Islanders have put together in their entire careers. "I liked our composure on the bench". "There were a lot of twists and turns to that game...."

"It's one game. There's still a ways to go, but we'd obviously rather win it than lose it, obviously, and try and get ready for game two. (We) didn't flinch at all".

Bailey emerged as the hero by batting in a rebound of Mathew Barzal's shot in overtime, but he had to have a short memory and recover after hitting a post in the final seconds of regulation.

Leddy gave the Islanders a 3-2 lead with 7:25 left in the third as he sent a long shot from left point at the blue line that knuckled past Murray.

With Murray pulled for an extra skater, Schultz fired a one-timer from the left circle inside the left post with 1:29 left. He was glad it didn't end up being a costly miss. "Just happy to get the win". Malkin shuffled the puck for several seconds before firing a shot that glanced off the stick of Islanders defenseman Adam Pelech and fluttered over Lehner's shoulder with 6:19 remaining.

The raucous crowd that was chanting "Let's Go Islanders!" from before the teams came out for pregame warmups, roared when the Islanders stepped on the ice and booed loudly when the Penguins followed. The Penguins rebounded in Pittsburgh on December 6 and won by the score of 6-2 and also won in a shootout in NY by the score of 2-1 on December 10.

The action started early as Jordan Eberle opened the scoring for the Isles just 1:40 into the game after an Islander goal in the first minute was overturned after a coaches challenge. The Penguins managed to attempt three of such shots during five-on-five play, one more than the Islanders were able to attempt themselves. The Pens also finished the season with 100 points.

Kuhnhackl had a potential game-winning goal waved off just 1:12 into overtime, when officials determined upon review that he collided with Murray and knocked the goal off its moorings before the puck crossed the goal line.
