He allegedly touched people in the face and sprayed something from a spray bottle on them while on the flight to Sky Harbor International Airport.

After landing and taxiing to the gate, the flight crew was readying to disembark the disruptive passenger when the man "opened the service door on the opposite side of the aircraft and jumped out", police say.

Neither police nor American Airlines indicated whether it had been determined what was sprayed by the man but there were no reports of injuries to passengers.

An American Airlines passenger jumped from a grounded plane after landing at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) on Friday morning.

It's unclear what was in the bottle that the man sprayed onto passengers.

Passengers on the plane declined to press charges against the man; however, he could still face trespassing charges for his jump onto the tarmac. A witness who spoke with the Arizona Republic said the man was also swearing and hitting multiple passengers.

In a statement to The Arizona Republic, American Airlines said: "American had requested law enforcement meet flight 1346 upon arrival in Phoenix due to a disruptive passenger".

According to the police statement, he was stopped by airport workers after his dramatic escape bid and was taken into custody.

Airport operations were not disrupted, Thompson said.

She said flight attendants tried to calm him down and even offered to move him but the man tried to stand up just before the flight was to land.

"Law enforcement and paramedics responded".
