The morning started with the former captain and vice captain being named in Australia's 15-man World Cup squad.

Smith and Warner are now playing for Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad respectively in the IPL after serving their 12-month ban for their role in the ball-tampering scandal that rocked Australian cricket past year.

Australia have dropped a World Cup selection bombshell after leaving out one of their veteran bowling stars for the tournament in England.

Meanwhile, if their IPL form is concerned, David Warner has been churning out runs on a consistent basis for SRH. The duo was part of Australia's victorious campaign in 2015, and was all but certain to feature in the 2019 edition until they got embroiled in the infamous Sandpapergate in South Africa previous year.

While banned from global cricket, the pair was still able to play in professional leagues overseas, and Warner has been in outstanding form in the Indian Premier League.

While Jason is likely to miss two scheduled Mumbai matches on May 2 and May 5 against SRH and Kolkata Knight Riders, Stoinis might leave a little early considering RCB's dismal run in the IPL this season. But fortunately for him, the selectors named him in the Australia A squad for the England tour in July.

"We believe the 2019/20 contract list provides us with a versatile group of players who can represent Australia across all three formats over the contract period", national selector Trevor Hohns said.

The return of Smith and Warner was expected and it was always tight for Handscomb to find a place in the World Cup squad after their return.

Usman Khawaja and Shaun Marsh have been included in the squad, which is a reward for their good form in the recent games.

Selectors opted for two spinners in Adam Zampa and Nathan Lyon and five quick bowlers.

"Given the depth of talent and competition for spots there were a number of tough calls we had to make to settle on our squad of 15", said Hohns.

2019/20 CA men's contracts: Pat Cummins, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Alex Carey, Aaron Finch, Usman Khawaja, Peter Handscomb, Marcus Harris, Travis Head, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon, Glenn Maxwell, Shaun Marsh, Tim Paine, James Pattinson, Jhye Richardson, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, David Warner, Adam Zampa.
