Swiss scientists made the alarming discovery after taking swabs from the beards of 18 men and found every single sample was crawling with bacteria.

The study was trying to find out whether there was a risk of humans picking up a dog-born disease from an MRI scanner also used for examinations by vets.

The research by the Hirslanden Clinic in Switzerland found that every sampled beard contained bacteria, and almost half had bugs that could be hazardous to human health.

A new study which sampled men's beards found more harmful bacteria in human whiskers than in dog fur.

Yahoo! reports that all the beards contained a high microbial count, while only 23 of the 30 dogs showed any signs of bacterial infestation. "The remainder had moderate levels", Gutzeit said.

After the MRI scans of the dogs, the scanners were disinfected.

"On the basis of these findings, dogs can be considered as clean compared with bearded men", Professor Andreas Gutzeit from the Hirslanden Clinic told the Mail on Sunday.

Beard Liberation Front founder Keith Flett said beards were being unnecessarily targeted, suggesting pogonophobia was to blame - the fear or extreme dislike of beards.

"I don't believe that beards in themselves are unhygienic".
