Pulitzers: Capital Gazette wins for coverage of newsroom massacre

It was just announced by Pulitzer Prize Administrator Dana Canedy that Jackie Sibblies Drury's Fairview has officially won the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

The Pulitzer Prize board awarded the Capital Gazette a special citation Monday for their response to the shooting.

"Aretha is blessed and highly favoured even in death".

Winners in the field of news reporting included the Wall Street Journal for its investigations of discreet payments orchestrated by Michael Cohen to silence women who claimed to have had affairs with Donald Trump before he became the U.S. president.

This included a special public service award to South Florida Sun Sentinelfor its coverage of the shooting rampage at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette received an award for breaking news reporting for its coverage of another deadly shooting - the massacre at the Tree of Life synagogue that left 11 people dead.

Three Pulitzers were awarded to coverage of gun control matters.

In the aftermath of the series, the university's president resigned, and more than 650 women have sued USC, alleging the school failed to protect them from sexual abuse. The university recently agreed to settle a class-action lawsuit by paying $215 million to potentially thousands of female students and alumni examined by Tyndall, who has denied the allegations and has not been charged with any crime.

The Pulitzer Price for global reporting went to Maggie Michael, Maad al-Zikry, and Nariman El-Mofty of the Associated Press for their coverage of the war in Yemen, and to Reuters journalists for stunning reports on the expulsion and murder of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.

As a result of the work by reporter Maggie Michael, photographer Nariman El-Mofty and video journalist Maad al-Zikry, at least 80 prisoners were released from secret detention sites, and the United Nations rushed food and medicine to areas where the AP revealed that people were starving while corrupt officials diverted worldwide food aid.

Reuters was honored for worldwide reporting for its coverage of atrocities committed against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar. The story cost two reporters, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, their liberty.

Jackie Sibblies Drury won the drama prize for Fairview, a play which seems to be a black family comedy in the style of The Cosby Show or A Different World, but takes some unexpected turns, both for the characters onstage and the audience themselves.

For literature, Richard Powers' novel The Overstory won the fiction prize, while David Blight's biography of Frederick Douglass won for the best work of history.

Novelist Richard Powers won the Pulitzer for fiction for "The Overstory", a panoramic look at nine Americans whose lives become entwined due to their experiences with trees, and David W. Blight picked up the prize in history for his acclaimed biography "Frederick Douglas".

The Pulitzer board most recently awarded a special citation prize in 2010 to Hank Williams, the country music legend who died in 1953.
