A 34-year-old Perth DJ has been charged with attempted kidnapping after he allegedly tried to snatch a two-year-old boy in San Francisco.

Holyoake ran for about half a block with the mother and several bystanders in pursuit before the bystanders grabbed and held him until police arrived.

Citing local police, the San Francisco Chronicle states Roscoe Bradley Holyoake, 34, grabbed a two-year-old boy from his mother in the city's popular Castro District on Friday.

The mother chased down Holyoake and took back her son while bystanders detained the former Perth resident.

'I think my fatherly instincts kicked in and I did what I thought was right, ' Walker told KTVU.

Roscoe is reportedly a well-known DJ in Perth, performing under the stage name DJ Roski.

Holyoake gave up after a short chase, the dentist said.

Sabrina Walker stayed with the distraught mother and her children.

She said she struggled with him and freed the boy from his grasp.

Holyoake's court-appointed lawyer, Stephen Olmo, said the Australian did not have a criminal record.

He has been a volunteer presenter at Perth community radio station RTRFM on and off over the past five years.

Holyoake was once on the board of Pride WA (Western Australia) - a lobby group supporting LGBTIQ people, PerthNow reported.

In December, he performed at the wrap party for entertainer Tim Minchin's new mini-series Upright, describing it on his website as an "absolute pleasure".
