Messi now has his 109th and 110th Champions League goals and, potentially, three extra matches to reduce the gap on Cristiano Ronaldo's 126, after Juventus were dumped out by Ajax.

Messi's magical run came after Red Devils right back Ashley Young failed to clear the ball.

But his second was rather more fortuitous.

United were comprehensively outclassed at the Nou Camp as they crashed out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage, with Barcelona's 3-0 win on the night sealing a 4-0 aggregate triumph.

MANCHESTER United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer insisted the club must take their lead from Lionel Messi's Barcelona after a humbling defeat last night.

In the first two minutes at the Camp Nou, United did more than they had in 90 minutes at Old Trafford.

"We have to aspire to get to that level of Barcelona, we can get there but we have loads of work to do".

Solskjaer is seeking to finish the season with a flourish but added of the Barca setback: "We gambled and you can say that we gambled and lost but we had to go for the first goal".

"At 2-0 straight after it was game over".

Jesse Lingard's 79th-minute shot from distance was a rare second-half highlight for United, while the introduction of former Barca star Alexis Sanchez for Lingard a minute later brought a round of applause from the home fans as they recognized the arrival of a former player.

They made an enterprising start as Marcus Rashford struck the top of the crossbar in the first few seconds but were thoroughly second best after five-time Ballon d'Or victor Messi opened the scoring after 16 minutes.

"Messi always gets us out of trouble and we're not going to apologise for having him", Valverde told a news conference.

"Roy Keane and Paul Scholes had it but they were world class players as well". "But the important thing is that we achieved our goal of reaching the semi-finals, which we hadn't for a long time".

Liverpool, who take a 2-0 lead to Porto on Wednesday, are now the most likely obstacle between them and their first Champions League final since they last won this tournament in 2015.
