A pet deer has gored a man to death and seriously injured his wife in a rare attack in Australia, police say.

The man, 47, had gone to feed the stag on his property in Victoria when the attack happened on Wednesday morning.

Both people suffered critical injuries however the man died at the scene a short time later.

Mr McDonald died from his injuries at the scene while his wife was flown to the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne with life-threatening injuries to her upper body and leg.

The deer has been euthanised.

Autumn is mating, or rutting, season for many species of deer, and is a particularly risky time to be around the wild animals.

Moyhu is a small, close-knit community and the town has been rallying around the family, who also had sheep on their small property.

The family had kept the stag for six years and it was the only deer living on the property, along with a small number of sheep. It is unclear if this animal was involved in the incident.

"Deer sightings and reports of public safety risk are becoming more common", the report said.

Victoria's National Park Association said in 2018 that the animals were destructive to the natural landscape. "They stop doing everything except for finding a female partner and become extremely aggressive", Howlett said.

But feral populations have since expanded across the country with increasing calls for greater controls in many areas where they are considered a pest. Sambar, fallow, red and hog deer are all found in Victoria.
