It is reported that the former Manchester United player has been arrested on suspicion of assaulting a woman.

He was heralded as part of Manchester United's famous "Class of 92", along with David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Gary Neville, Phil Neville and Paul Scholes, who came through the club's youth academy.

It's alleged that Scholes placed 140 bets on football matches, contrary to FA Rule E8, between 17 August 2015 and 12 January 2019.

He is viewed as a highly-regarded former professional who, in his coveted role, is charged with setting an example for and providing coaching and inspiration to the next generation of United heroes.

Butt was being questioned last night at Altrincham Police Station, the Daily Telegraph understands.

Butt won a string of Premier League titles in his playing career at Old Trafford and also played in the club's dramatic last-gasp 2-1 victory over Bayern Munich in the 1999 Uefa Champions League final.

"Police were called at around 2pm on Tuesday to reports that a woman had been assaulted at a house on Broadway, Hale".

A statement from GMP said: "A 44-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and remains in custody for questioning".

Butt, born and raised in the Manchester suburb of Gorton, married Shelley Barlow in 2008.
