Leon is in NY with the team and will catch Chris Sale in Tuesday night's series opener against the Yankees.

The Sox designated him for assignment Tuesday, the team announced.

While he shouldn't be hit with the blame for the struggles of Boston's starting rotation, Red Sox starters had an ERA of 7.92 in the six games Swihart started at catcher. He will need to pass through waivers before going to Triple-A Pawtucket.

It appears we have our first casualty of the Red Sox' slow start to the 2019 season. He hasn't collected a single hit in the last seven games (0-for-14 overall).

The Red Sox had only one catcher, Christian Vazquez, on the Major League Baseball roster with Swihart being DFA'd.

The Bedford, Texas, native is batting.231 this season with a home run, four runs batted in and an OPS of.695 through 29 plate appearances.

The Red Sox had to choose between Swihart and Leon.

Leon, who is due almost $2.5 million in 2019, went unclaimed on waivers and was sent to Pawtucket shortly before the season.
