She suffered fatal injuries in the horror plunge at Fordham University campus in NY, weeks before graduation.

University bosses are now investigating to find out how the group gained access to the tower.

Sydney Monfries, 22, a senior at New York City's Fordham University, died Sunday as a result of the injuries she sustained when she fell inside the campus' famed Keating Hall tower. While climbing the set of stairs, Monfries was said to have fallen almost 40 feet through an opening in the 83-year-old structure's first landing. Her condition was listed as critical at a hospital in the Bronx not far from the Fordham campus.

"It's scary, it's risky and I really feel bad for the person", Emma Azizo, a Fordham student, told WABC. Other clips on her Snapchat reportedly showed Monfries' friends stumbling through the darkness using their phones as flashlights to see before sitting on the tower's perch.

Christopher Rodgers, dean of students at Rose Hill, told The Ram in 2013 that since "the clock tower is rather unsafe, and therefore secured area of campus, students would likely face disciplinary action if they entered it". However, a senior, Anne, who declined to give her last name, said that "the doors aren't always locked. They're heartbroken. It's the hardest thing I've ever had to witness", the unnamed pal told ABC-TV. But there is no bell in the tower, the school said.

The fall knocked her unconscious and when paramedics arrived, they struggled to her out because the staircase was too narrow for them to maneuver the stretcher she was on.

'She couldn't breath. She hit her head, ' he said.

The accident occurred early in the morning before Fordham's annual Spring Preview event for admitted students.

Her death was announced to students in an email sent by the school, which described the "unimaginable loss" suffered by Ms Monfries' family, friends and school community.

There have been no reports of anyone falling from the tower, according to CBS New York.

President McShane said the school would award Monfries's bachelor's degree posthumously.
