NASA astronaut Anne McClain will secure the incoming craft with the space station's robotic arm.

FILE - U.S. astronaut Christina Koch, member of the main crew of the expedition to the International Space Station (ISS), looks on prior the launch of Soyuz MS-12 space ship at the Russian leased Baikonur cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, March 14, 2019.

Part of NASA's study of the effects of long spaceflights on the human body, Koch will spend 328 days in space. She is schedule to be on the ISS until February of next year, which will make her set a record for longest spaceflight for a woman.

Koch will, however, eclipse the 288 days former rocketeer Peggy Whitson spent in space from 2016-17. "To be able to contribute to that-to give my best every day to that-for as long as possible is a true honor and a dream come true".

NASA announced the extended assignments this week.

Koch will be joined by NASA astronaut Andrew Morgan, ESA (European Space Agency) astronaut Luca Parmitano, and Roscosmos cosmonaut Alexander Skvortsov on July 20, the official NASA blog states.

"NASA is looking to build on what we have learned with additional astronauts in space for more than 250 days", according to Jennifer Fogarty, chief scientist of the Human Research Program at NASA's Johnson Space Center. In the spirit of Chaffee's role to advance the USA space program, we're also proud to demonstrate a number of innovative capabilities for our Cygnus spacecraft during this mission, including our ability to load cargo close to launch and our planned long duration flight which will take place when Cygnus leaves the International Space Station.

The record now belongs to NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, who spent 288 days on the station in 2016 and 2017.

The 3,450kg load also included three free-flying robots to be tested as astronaut helpers, 40 black lab mice and 63 tiny student-research satellites.
