Gov. signs proclamation for Children's Mental Health Awareness

Indeed, mental health is the second most common reason for claims from group income protection*, with 24.1% of claims being for mental health; only marginally beaten by claims for cancer at 24.5%.

As we are in the month of May, let's take the time to focus on the awareness needing to be made in regards to mental health. "Mental health is the only chronic health condition where we are waiting to stage four of the disorder before we're doing anything".

Parents, volunteers, community partners, politicians - and a big contingent of children - gathered at St. Clair Child and Youth's Point Edward headquarters on May 9 to celebrate a pair of annual mental health-related awareness weeks: the Canadian Mental Health Association's Mental Health Week (May 6 to 12) and the Children's Mental Health Ontario's Children's Mental Health Week (May 5 to 11).

There has been some confusion that mental health and mental illness mean the same thing when they do not. There are many different mental illnesses, they have different symptoms, and they impact people differently. As CEO of Center for Change, my staff and I have the privilege of serving many members of our community who are experiencing some of the most challenging times of their lives - mental illnesses that are often invisible to the casual observer in ways that physical illnesses are not.

When there are pressures in our lives it is normal for people to sometimes feel worried, anxious or upset. She is now thriving as a sophomore at The Ohio State University and is committed to using the degree she is pursing in social work to support others living with mental health diagnoses.

Patty Kujawa and other advocates for mental health care came to Madison to help erase the stigma around the topic of mental health and speak with lawmakers about taking concrete steps to help young people in Wisconsin.

One in five people live with a mental illness, and 50% of all lifetime mental illnesses start by age 14.* The On Our Sleeves movement addresses these staggering statistics by providing educational resources, advocacy tools and philanthropic opportunities at OnOurSleeves.org.

Ninety percent of those who die by suicide have an underlying mental illness.

The leading national public health institute described mental illness as conditions that affect a person's thinking, feeling, mood or behavior.
