BRIGHTON have SACKED Chris Hughton as manager despite winning their battle against relegation this season.

Potter is understood to be among two or three candidates the club are discussing after sacking Hughton on Monday morning, after they finished fourth-bottom of the Premier League on 36 points.

Potter has impressed in south Wales after his appointment last summer, guiding Swansea to a tenth-placed finish in the Championship and the former defender is seen as a progressive, innovative coach who can take Brighton forward.

However, it is not necessarily a foregone conclusion that Potter will walk away from the Liberty Stadium after just 11 months in charge.

Brighton are declining to comment on the search for Hughton's successor.

Following the departure of several senior players, Potter handed first-team chances to a number of youngsters and his new-look team improved as 2018-19 progressed. But it is testament to the job that Potter's done that he is being eyed by Premier League clubs.

He is 1/6 to be the next Albion manager with SkyBet.

"I would like to wish Chris, Paul (Trollope) and Paul (Nevin) - who have all worked extremely hard throughout their time here - every success for the future, and thank them on behalf of everyone at the club".

Kick It Out, who call for equality in football, also tweeted their support for Hughton, who has also previously managed Norwich in the Premier League.

Other names linked with the post include Derby boss Frank Lampard, Northern Ireland coach Michael O'Neill and England Women manager Phil Neville.
